Summer hat

This summer was off to a great start with long days, sunny skies and 30-degree heat. Where did it all go? I don't know about you, but I feel like it's autumn already.

Let's go back to those early summer days, though. Some time in June I was travelling around Switzerland with my family, enjoying the hot weather. This is actually when I started thinking about getting a summer hat. I couldn't find anything I liked, so I quickly abandoned the idea of buying anything.

A few weeks later, I was at a women's soccer game. At the stadium, I saw lots of sports fans wearing crocheted bucket hats. While I liked the design of the hats, I wondered if the wool or cotton yarn wouldn’t feel too heavy on the head in the summer weather (it seems that it was the last hot weekend of the season, by the way). And that's when it struck me.

Some time prior to that, I had bought some paper yarn. I had never used paper yarn before, so when I saw it in one of the supply cafés, I just had to check it out. Initially, I thought I would make a container or a bag, but after visiting the stadium, I knew I would make a paper bucket hat.

Did you know that bucket hats were originally designed to protect fishermen and farmers from the rain? Isn’t that ironic? Nowadays, I see more people wearing them as fashion accessories. Personally, I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with them, but I'm definitely in the love phase now! I've even crocheted two different styles. The best part is that they are both light and fit me and my husband well. I hope I’ll get the chance to wear them still this season!

What do you think of them? Feel free to let me know. If you like them, I'd be more than happy to make one for you or teach you how to make one yourself!
